America’s Civil War Heroes: Joe DeBell Travel back in time to meet heroes of the Civil War! Role play what it was like to be a Civil War soldier in the 1860’s, and check out some Civil War themed comic books. Comic Books Galore!: Lenny Palermo Are you interested in collecting comic books and comic book memorabilia? Learn how to find the value of comic books and enjoy handling part of a huge collection! Holy Costumes, Batman!: Jazmyn Palermo & Jessica Cheng Create a superhero and design your own costume. Learn the incredible history of superhero costuming! Join the Comic-con Band: George Hochbrueckner Play in a band with cool instruments and real musicians! Create comic book themed songs and perform them in the band! So - You Want to Create a Super Hero!: George Casden What are superheroes? What do they look like? Learn basic cartooning and drawing techniques to create the super hero you want! Godzilla! Weapon of Mass Destruction!: Josh DeBell Meet Godzilla – “King of the Monsters”, through movie clips, novels, comics, video games, and even a Godzilla board game. Superheroes of Musical Imagination: Ted Canning Find out how musical creativity saved the people of Trinidad from gangs and racism. Play music on real steel drums, and learn about how they were invented. What If? – How to Come Up with Ideas and Make Comics: Dan Hosek A brief introduction to the various “jobs” involved in making a comic: writing the story, the art (pencil, inks, and coloring) and lettering. We’ll create our own comics by asking, “What if?” to create story ideas. |

2015 Workshops
A. Craft a Poem
(session 1 and session 2 grades k-5)
Use a variety of stamps, craft supplies, and paper to inspire your poetry or to decorate the poetry you have created.
B. The Poetry of Shel Silverstein
(session 1 grades k-5) (session 2 grades 6-12)
Shel Silverstein is known for his imagination, silliness, and illustrated poems that also reveal a serious side. In this workshop you will have the opportunity to read some of his poems and create some of your own.
C. Poems and Songs of the American Civil War
Joe DeBell (session 1 grades 6-12) (session 2 grades k-5)
The poems and songs of the Civil War era are gripping and powerful. From the secession of South Carolina and the opening battle at Fort Sumter to Lee’s surrender at Appomattox and Lincoln’s assassination. Come back in time and see what it was like to be a Civil War soldier. Join 23 year reenactor Joe DeBell as you see, feel and hear what equipment, supplies and uniforms were like in the 1860’s. Listen to the music from that era and read the poetry of the period too!
D. Puppets, Poems and Play!
Sharon Peck (session 1 and session 2 grades k-5)
This workshop addresses using poems, chants, and rhymes with puppets. Participants will explore three types of puppetry to explore how to use puppets to enact poetry readings. Participants will explore tabletop puppetry, shadow puppetry, and hand puppetry. Participants will have the opportunity to make at least one puppet and perform a poem with their puppet.
E. Cartoons and Poems for Your Funny Bones!
George Casden (session 1 grades 6-12) (session 2 grades k-5)
Whether you like limericks or haikus, your words go well with cartoon drawings. Bring your poem to life with your favorite drawings. Learn simple cartoon techniques to go with your poem
F. Explore the Poetry in Comic Books
Lenny Palermo (session 1 grades k-5) (session 2 grades 6-12)
Superheroes like poetry too! Check out how poetry is used in comic books. Get hands on experience looking through part of a 40+ year old comic book collection. Both children and parents are welcome to participate.
G. Adding Music to Poems
George Hochbrueckner (session 1 grades 6-12) (session 2 grades k-5)
Participants get to be part of the band and improvise music to any poems or ideas that they bring to the class. No musical background is required, just a desire to have fun and be creative with the music creation process.
H. Lyric Poetry on Steel Drums
Ted Canning (session 1 and session 2 grades 6-12)
Hear the story of how this new type of musical instrument was invented by a teenager. Have fun being part of a band and learn how to play a simple song on the steel drums. No musical experience is necessary.
I. How do you Wokka Wokka?
Jessica Rounding (session 1 only grades k-5)
In this workshop we will explore Elizabeth Blueml's book How Do You Wokka - Wokka? We will complete activities, do silly Wokka Wokka's, and expand our poetry skills in silly ways.
J. Art is Inspiration: The Ekphrastic Muse
Louise Palermo (session 2 only grades 6-12)
This workshop will inspire students to look closely at works of art to inspire the poet inside them. Elementary students will take poems written by known artists and match them with iconic works of art. This exercise will inspire looking for meaning in both visual and language arts. Middle/high school students will take this further by using visual arts to inspire their own poetry.
